The authors studied the results of 1429 blood cultures performed during the three
years period between October 1,1968 and September 30, 1971.
All the cultures were done by the trained clinical laboratory personnel, by the requests
of the clinical doctors for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment for in and out patients
of the St. Mary's Hospital, Catholic Medical Center, Seoul.
For each case, 3 to 4 ml. of venous blood was drawn with the sterile technic, and
immediately, half the blood was mixed with the thioglycollate broth, and the remaining
half with the bile broth.
They were incubated at 37℃ and daily observations were made for the possible
bacterial growth.
A period of at least 14 days were incubated until they were decided as negative.
Of the 1429 cases studied, 210 cases (14.7% of total cases) showed positive results for
the cultures. Tabular analyses for these positive cases were made according to the
species of microorganism, age distributions and months of the year.
The most frequently found organism in this series was Salmonella group D, with a
total of 145 cases (or 69.1% of total positive cases). This figure is somewhat higher
than the previous reports on the blood cultures of Korean patients, and the possible
reasons for this was briefly discussed.
Next to the Salmonella group D were 16 cases of Escherichia coli, 13 cases of
Staphylococcus aureus, 10 cases of Paracolon group followed by 6 cases of Pseudoinonas
species, 6 cases of Staphylococcus albus, 5 cases of Klebsiella species, 3 cases of
Intermediate coliform group, 2 cases of Salmonella group A and each one case of
Proteus mirabilis, Salmonella group A, Salmonella group B and beta hemolytic
Streptococcus and Alkaligenes species.
